Super Chennai Honours Baradwaj Rangan as Icon of the Month; Celebrates the Art of Looking Inside the Frame
*National Award-winning film critic reflects on cinema, criticism and Chennai’s influence
Chennai, 12 October, 2026: Super Chennai hosted a special edition of Super Chennai Arattai, featuring Baradwaj Rangan, National Award-winning film critic and author, who was honoured as Super Chennai’s Icon of the Month. The conversation explored his journey into film criticism, Chennai’s influence on his work, the evolution of cinema and the changing relationship between filmmakers, critics and audiences.
Discussing his approach to film criticism, Rangan highlighted the importance of consistent writing and developing a deeper understanding of cinema. He explained that criticism goes beyond expressing whether one likes or dislikes a film; it involves examining the reasons behind that response and taking readers through the critic’s thought process. The conversation also touched upon the relationship between critics and filmmakers, with Rangan reflecting on how a genuine appreciation for cinema shapes these interactions.
Rangan spoke about the importance of looking beyond a simple verdict and articulating the reasoning behind a review. His approach encourages readers to engage with a film more thoughtfully, understanding not just a critic’s response but also the analysis that informs it. The discussion also explored the evolving Tamil film industry, the influence of OTT platforms, the rise of pan-Indian cinema and opportunities for emerging voices in film writing.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Baradwaj Rangan, National Award-winning film critic, said, “It’s more like taking them through your thought process while watching the movie. Of course, that will come through, whether it worked for you or not. But that’s not the primary intent.” He highlighted how film criticism can help audiences engage more deeply with cinema by offering insight into the thought process behind a review.
Commenting on the recognition, Mr. Ranjeeth Rathod, Super Chennai, said, “Cinema and storytelling play an important role in shaping a city’s cultural identity and the way people connect with it. Baradwaj Rangan has, through his insightful criticism and conversations with filmmakers, encouraged audiences to engage with cinema beyond the screen. Recognising him as Super Chennai’s Icon of the Month is our way of celebrating his contribution to film criticism and the larger cultural landscape of Chennai.”
Mr. Sachien Nichani, Chief Operating Officer, Silversky, said, “Through Super Chennai Arattai, we celebrate the people and ideas that shape our city. Honouring Baradwaj Rangan as our Icon of the Month recognises his contribution to film criticism and the conversations he has inspired around cinema and storytelling.”
The session was part of Super Chennai’s ongoing effort to recognise individuals who have contributed to the city’s cultural and creative landscape while creating a platform for meaningful conversations around Chennai’s identity, influence and future.
