CHENNAI — Rotary District 3232 officially inaugurated its flagship initiative, the Empowered Women Program, aiming to equip 1,000 to 5,000 young girls and women with practical, income-generating skills to foster financial independence, dignity, and self-reliance.
The inauguration event was graced by Chief Guests District Governor Rtn. Suresh Jain and Mr. C.K. Kumaravel, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Naturals Salon, alongside District officials, Rotarians, Rotaractors, faculty members, students, and guests.
Welcoming the gathering, Rtn. Ajitha Balan, District Chair for Empowered Women, expressed gratitude to DG Rtn. Suresh Jain for the trust and leadership opportunity. She highlighted the core philosophy of the initiative: enabling women to turn their time and focused efforts into sustainable livelihood opportunities that strengthen families and communities.
Key Highlights & The Vision Behind the Initiative
The program was inspired by Rtn. Ajitha Balan’s personal journey of learning artificial flower making as a hobby—specifically mastering durable, washable, and waterproof foam-sheet Jasmine buds and blossoms. Having successfully trained her own staff, Suseela and Lavanya, to earn extra income alongside their routine work, she envisioned expanding the initiative to empower underprivileged women across Chennai, with long-term plans for international export.
Addressing the gathering, the District Chair emphasized that women can generate a steady income from home by dedicating just two to three hours daily with minimal investment.
Six Core Skill Development Projects Launched
The Empowered Women Program comprises six tailored, high-demand vocational training
projects:
Artificial Flower Making: Crafting long-lasting, eco-friendly Jasmine buds, bloomed flowers, Pitchi, Jathi, Malli, and decorative floral items used for personal adornment, dance, and stage decorations.
Artificial Jewellery Making: Fostering creativity and micro-entrepreneurship through handcrafted fashion jewellery.
Tanjore Art on Blouses: Merging traditional South Indian cultural heritage with modern fashion to design high-value, marketable garments.
Reusable Cloth Menstrual Pad Making: Promoting women’s menstrual hygiene, eco-friendly living, and local employment generation.
Beautician Training (in association with Naturals): Providing professional grooming and beauty therapy skills to open doors for jobs and self-employment.
Housekeeping and Hospitality Training: Preparing women for employment opportunities in the rapidly growing service sector.
Speaking on the partnership with Naturals, Mr. C.K. Kumaravel addressed the gathering to outline new collaborative avenues and training opportunities being introduced through the alliance.
