CHENNAI, August 1, 2026: Long before India entered its period of enterprise and industrial growth, a visionary entrepreneur from Southern Tamil Nadu made a pioneering yet unsung contribution. Today, a new biography sheds light on his extraordinary life. Cementing Legacies: The Life of SNN Sankaralinga Iyer – A Pioneering Polymath, authored by veteran journalist K Balakumar, offers a definitive look at the man who transformed the region’s industrial landscape.
The ventures founded by SNN Sankaralinga Iyer, including Indo-Commercial Bank and The India Cements, were established in pre-Independence India.
Without institutional support or a formidable entrepreneurial pedigree, he leveraged his experience as a banker to venture into the production of commodities that aligned with India’s spirit of self-reliance – from salt, rubber and ink to cement and chemicals. Among his several notable achievements was leading The India Cements to launch a public issue, the first in independent India. The issue was oversubscribed.
The biography presents a complete portrait of the man, be it his nationalist stance, his affinity for the traditional attire of veshti and white shirt, his philanthropic tendencies, and his conviction that language exists to unite—not divide. A Gandhian at heart, Sankaralinga Iyer’s deep love for Hindi led him to learn the language in his thirties. He authored a primer for the students of the language, apart from writing novels in Hindi.
Vignettes depicting Sankaralinga Iyer’s habits, personality and think-big attitude fill the book. An early riser, Sankaralinga Iyer would begin his day at 4:00 a.m. reading the Kamba Ramayanam, along with the Valmiki Ramayanam. An untiring optimist, he would not give up when faced with challenge, evidenced in his tenacious search for a limestone-rich spot in Tirunelveli, South Tamil Nadu, to locate his cement factory. On a quiet day of August 1949, when The India Cements commenced production at the remote Thalaiyuthu, history was made but Sankaralinga Iyer merely rolled up his sleeves and focused on the next challenge: marketing the product—Sankar Cement. His ideas to create a vast township in Thalaiyuthu, along the lines of Jamshedpur, reflect the grandeur and clarity of his vision. Unfortunately, a near-fatal car crash in 1958 greatly impacted his mobility.
Nevertheless, his first question upon regaining consciousness was not about his own condition but whether his driver was safe – a telling glimpse of his compassionate character.
Brought to life through painstaking research and retrieval of family memory, this book was inspired by Chandra Sankar, Sankaralinga Iyer’s granddaughter-in-law, who believes that the book and the remarkable stories it holds preserve for future generations the vision and values from which their institutions arose.

The project was coordinated and facilitated by SB Prabhakar Rao, a veteran of The Sanmar Group who personally assisted Sankaralinga Iyer during the final years of his life. Drawing on his intimate knowledge of the man and his times, he helped ensure the authenticity of the book.
Author K Balakumar believes the story of Sankaralinga Iyer transcends business history. “What fascinated me was not merely what he built, but how he built it. He was a man who repeatedly ventured into uncharted territory, whether in banking or industry, and succeeded through trust, vision and hard work. He belonged to a generation that built institutions, often without seeking recognition.
I felt this was a story that deserved to be told.”
The biography has been published simultaneously in Tamil. The challenging task of capturing the nuances of this multifaceted life in elegant Tamil was ably undertaken by V Ramesh, a former senior executive of The Sanmar Group.
